Starting Your Day
Start your day in the Retail POS (S-Series) app by having each employee clock in to record a time clock punch. A manager must then sign into the register and open a register shift before sales can be processed. With an open register shift, cashiers can sign in and begin running transactions.

Clock In
To use the time clock feature, employees must clock in with their unique register code before they start working. All staff, cashiers and managers alike, clock in the same way.
Time clock use requires an active internet connection at the register and more than 1 employee set up in BackOffice. Without internet, clock punches will not be recorded or synced to the BackOffice Time Clock report.
- From the sign in screen, enter a register code and tap 'Clock In' (iOS) or ‘In’ (Android).
Don’t know your register code? Find it on the BackOffice Staff List. Learn how to access the Staff List here.
If staff clock in at the wrong time or have other time clock issues, visit our troubleshooting guide for help.
- Tap ‘OK’ to dismiss the clock punch notification, or tap ‘Print’ to print a chit to a connected receipt printer confirming the punch.
- Employees must be clocked out to be able to clock in and vice versa.
- Don’t have a receipt printer? Take a screenshot or photo of the screen.

Signing in allows employees to access the register and its features. At the start of each day, a Register Manager must sign in and open a register shift before cashiers will be able to run sales when they sign in.
Signing in is only necessary if more than 1 employee is set up in BackOffice.
- Enter a register code, then tap 'Sign In'.

Open the Register Shift
A Register Manager must open a register shift to begin each business day in the Retail POS (S-Series) app. Register shifts enable cashiers to run transactions and make it possible to balance the cash drawer at the end of the day.
When finished processing transactions, close the register shift to end the day in the Retail POS (S-Series) app. Learn more here about ending your day in Lightspeed Retail.
- Count the amount of cash in the drawer for a register.
- Sign into the register as a Register Manager.
- If necessary, tap ‘Open Register Shift’ on the Main Menu (iOS) or register menu (Android).
If ‘Close Register Shift’ appears instead, a register shift is already open.
