Opening & Closing
Register Shifts

Open and close a register shift each business day in the Retail POS (S-Series) app to control when a register is available to run transactions, make balancing the cash drawer easier, and maintain accurate reporting.

Only Register Managers can open and close register shifts. Register shifts cannot be opened or closed in BackOffice.

Open a Register Shift

A Register Manager must open a register shift to begin each day in the Retail POS (S-Series) app. Register shifts enable cashiers to run transactions and make balancing the cash drawer easier at the end of the day.

Visit our full Starting Your Day article to learn how to perform other beginning-of-day actions, such as clocking in.

  1. Sign into a register as a Register Manager.

Signing in is only necessary if more than 1 employee is set up in BackOffice. Not sure how to sign in? Visit our Starting Your Day article to learn how.

If unable to sign in, visit our Login / Access Troubleshooting guide for help.

  2. Count the amount of cash in the drawer for that register.

To open a connected cash drawer from the Retail POS (S-Series) app, tap ‘Open the Cash Drawer’ on the Main Menu (iOS) or register menu (Android).

  3. If necessary, tap 'Open Register Shift' on the Main Menu (iOS) or register menu (Android).
    • If ‘Close Register Shift’ appears instead, a register shift is already open.
    • Each register can have one register shift open at a time, but multiple shifts can be opened each day.
